Career Driven

Learn to drive. Free.

We'll help get you on the road to a great career.

It’s simple – tradies need transport. And without a driver’s license, travelling from site to site or carrying that ute-load of tools can be challenging.

CITB is changing that. Our Career Driven initiative provides doorways2construction students and first-year apprentices who don’t yet hold a driver’s licence with free driving lessons.

Eligible students and apprentices can access up to:

  • Vehicle On Road Test (VORT) lessons - up to a maximum of 10 hours

  • Competency-based training and assessment (CBT&A) lessons - up to a maximum of 10 hours

Not only will it give younger apprentices a key skill, it will also make them more attractive to employers in the building and construction industry.

Am I eligible?
In order to be eligible, you must be aged 16 years or older and-

  • currently enrolled as a doorways2construction student with a letter of offer for employment as an apprentice/trainee or;
  • have completed the doorways2construction program and have a letter of offer for employment as an apprentice/trainee or;

How can I apply?
Completing the application is easy. Simply upload a copy of your letter of offer for employment. (we can’t process your application without it!)

How do I go about booking lessons?
It’s pretty easy. As an eligible apprentice, all you have to do is locate an available instructor near you and forward us their details (name and contact info are a good start). That’s about it. CITB will then contact your instructor to arrange invoicing and payment, while you just relax.

Do they need to be an RAA instructor? No, they simply need to be an accredited instructor.

What is a letter of offer for employment?

It is a document which provides evidence in writing that an employer or Group Training Organisation has offered to employ you at a future date.

The letter should include the following:

  • Employer's business/organisation name (eg. XYZ Construction, or HIA Group Training)
  • Employer's full name and position within the organisation (eg. Barry Humphries, Site Supervisor)
  • Employer's ABN (Australian Business Number). An ABN is a unique 11 digit number that identifies your employer to the government and community. You can search for your employer's ABN.
  • The role that you will be employed as, eg; apprentice electrician.
  • The date you will start your employment.

Alternatively, your employer can complete the on-line Employer Verification form to verify the apprenticeship opportunity

I was a D2C student, am I eligible?

Yes, you are. If you have a letter of offer of employment from an employer or Group Training Organisation.

Do I have to book all ten lessons?

No. There are simply up to ten lessons available for you. Some people need more lessons than others. We recommend booking the first five lessons initially, and then booking additional lessons if you need to.

How do I book a lesson?

Once we’ve notified you that everything is set up, simply contact the instructor or their employer directly to book your lesson. Lessons can be booked by phone. Contact CITB for further assistance.

Will there be an instructor available in my area?

We are confident that there will either be an RAA instructor or similarly accredited instructor in your area who can provide driver training. You might need to jump online to find out where and who they are. Once you’ve found one, just let us know their contact details. You can do this by calling us on 8172 9500 or sending us an email.

Do I need my own car?

No, you don’t. However, you may need access to a car to practice your driving between lessons to increase your hours.

Will doing this give me my P's?

No. The lessons are to assist you in getting your Probationary License. Under current legislation, you are still required to hold your learners permit for 12 months before gaining your Probationary License.

Once you have submitted your application using the below form and commenced your apprenticeship, you may wish to apply for the Work Equipment Allowance incentive.
