Crystalline silica safety and compliance
Competency Standard
This short course is non-accredited and does not result in a unit of competency.
Prerequisites
Students must be able to speak and understand basic English to communicate to a level to perform their duties.
Learning Outcomes
1. Identify the health risks associated with exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS), including signs and symptoms of silicosis.
2. Determine how a material contains crystalline silica.
3. How RCS is generated during processing, how workers can be exposed, and the relevant workplace exposure standards.
4. Determine 'controlled' processing of crystalline silica and silicosis (CSS).
5. Learn the types of respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and determine if RPE is compliant.
6. Fit-checking, fit-testing for tight-fitting RPE, and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment.
7. WHS Regulation requirements.
8. General housekeeping and cleaning methods to eliminate or minimise risk of exposure to RCS for CSS processes.
Course Objectives
To manage risks associated with crystalline silica found within building and construction and gain Safework SA compliance in accordance with regulation 529CD(4) of the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2012
